Praying the Creed: 8

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of  heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord…

Stop!is

Now let us take a breath, we are into our second week of praying our way through the creed and we have reached a mile stone.

Our journey this far has taken us through affirmation of our belief, our firm trust in God and recognition of His status as our Father.  We have delighted in his creation and vowed to care for the world which he has allowed us to share.  Our journey has taken us back  to the beginning of life to understand more of Christ’s role in the creation of the world, his relationship with God and how in that role He becomes our Lord.  A Lord not to rule over us in might and power, but a Lord who provides, guides, leads and nurtures into a partnership of love and trust.  Not an earthly lord and grand master.  A spiritual leader whom we can call, rabonni, sir or master.

Reflection:

The power of repeating the words in the creed is manifest in two ways.

Repetition of the familiar

Similar to repeating formal prayers that are learned perhaps from early life we can use these words at all times.  Sometimes we might be too deeply hurt, feel ourselves too deeply distanced from God or too emotional to voice our own words.  These well learned and well used phrases are used to break through those barriers and reach out to the God we know is there but we cannot feel or touch at this moment in time.  Our mind might go into neutral as we say the words, but our inner selves can relate to the words just because they are familiar and we begin our journey back.

When repeating these words as a collective in worship with others there is a power and communion in speaking and listening together.  The words of our mouths and the mediation of our hearts rise in an acceptable incense to our God and Father Jehovah

As a recollection of our thoughts for this day, let us simply recite again the whole of the creed, and use as our focus the initial words…. I believe.  Concentrate on what you believe as you repeat the familiar words, take your time to consider each phrase.

Below are some images, texts and videos that might assist your meditation.  creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

God bless you today and all days and keep you safe from harm and ever in His presence and joy.

Amen
